Whether he likes it or not, Mark Reynolds understands the role he's been put in.
With newcomer Manny Machado seemingly entrenched at third base -- and rightfully so after hitting his third homer in four Major League games on Sunday -- Reynolds has been relegated to splitting first-base duties with Wilson Betemit.
But even after a pair of days on the bench, Reynolds made the most of a starting opportunity, knocking an RBI single in the sixth for the go-ahead run in a 5-3 win over the Royals to give the O's a split of the four-game series at Camden Yards.
"It's what I've got to do," Reynolds said. "It's the situation I'm in. When I'm there, I'll be ready to go."
The win moves the O's into the American League's second Wild Card spot, finishing a stretch of 30 games in 31 days ahead of Monday's off-day.
"We're definitely tired," shortstop J.J. Hardy said. "We're all going to enjoy our off-day, but today was a huge win for us."

If reaching 60 wins quicker than any year since 1998 and being well ahead of schedule to snap a streak of 13 consecutive losing seasons isn't enough evidence, Manny Machado is here to drive the point home.
"It's a new era," Machado said. "We haven't won in a long time and this ball club has been winning without me. And hopefully now that I'm up here, I can contribute." If his performances going forward look anything like Friday night's, "contribute" is a monumental understatement. In just his second career game, the Orioles' top position player prospect launched his first two Major League home runs, as the Orioles beat the Royals, 7-1, to even the series at Camden Yards. The win was the O's sixth in their past seven games, ensuring that their place atop the American League Wild Card standings is secure for at least another day."[Manager] Buck [Showalter] brought me up for a reason, and it was to help this team," Machado said. "So, I'm going to do anything I can to help this team and try to make a playoff [game]."Machado -- just 20 years and 35 days old -- became the youngest player in Orioles history to record a multi homer game. Both blasts landed in the exact same spot in the left-field stands, and each came on a hanging breaking pitch from Royals starter Luke Hochevar. In the fifth, Machado belted a hanging slider on the inner half for a solo shot to push the Orioles' lead to 3-1. "It was the best feeling ever," Machado said. "The crowd here loves me, and for them to support me like that, after my first home run, it just felt great."Machado took another hanger from Hochevar -- this one a curve ball over the heart of the plate -- and hit it to the very same fan in the sixth, a three-run blast that all but put the game away as the Orioles took a 7-1 lead. After a little prodding from Adam Jones, Machado stepped out of the dugout for a curtain call, waving to the crowd of 17,277 that was giving him a standing ovation and chanting his name. "I've dreamed about that my whole life," Machado said.
In his first two days, Machado has passed every test, and made quick work on the record books. His first homer marked the youngest by an Orioles player since Hall of Famer Jim Palmer did it as a 19-year-old on May 16, 1965. His second -- which also scored Wilson Betemit and Nate McLouth -- amazingly landed in the same spot: Adam Corder's hands. Corder, 15, is a Millersville, Md., native who currently lives in the United Arab Emirates and caught both of Machado's homers from section 78, row 14 at Camden Yards.
"I was surprised," said Machado, who met with Corder after the game and exchanged some autographed balls and a bat for his first home run ball. "I heard it in the dugout somebody told the officer the same kid caught both balls. I was like: 'What? That's crazy.'"

Who's on first.
Paul and I did a comedy routine for our homeschool talent show called "Who's on first?" by William "Bud" Abbott, & Lou Costello. Mom took a video of the act but it was too quiet, Paul and I are making a new one. I will try to get the re-make out. In the mean time, you can watch our inspiration below.
Like father, like son.
Yesterday, Steve Johnson (son of Orioles hall of famer Davey Johnson) made his major league debut, 23 years after after Davey Johnson's debut.
# 1. Johnson's first start carries O's to victory!
#2. Sparks fly after Thames collides with gate. (lol on this one)

#4. Reynolds lifts a solo shot to right-center
#5. Markakis cranks a two-run homer to right.
#6. Wieters drives in five in win over Mariners
#7. Johnson fans nine in first career start.
Other exciting news... MANNY MACHADO IS COMING TO BALTIMORE!!!!!!! Manny Machado was an AA player in Bowie for the Baysox. He's had 11 homers this year (these stats are from the Baysox), 13 stolen bases, 26 doubles, and 59 RBI'S. And another thing, HE IS AWESOME!!

When Steve Johnson was evaluating his options as a Minor League free agent last winter, the choice was simple. He wanted to remain with Baltimore, spurning offers from several other organizations who could never give Johnson his childhood dream: donning the hometown Orioles' orange.
But even the 24-year-old Johnson couldn't have fantasized a night like Wednesday, a made-for-the-movies type fantasy where fate and family intersected. With dad Dave watching proudly as part of the Camden Yards crowd, Johnson tossed six strong innings to pick up the win in his first Major League start on the 23-year anniversary of his father's first career victory as an Oriole. Johnson's nine strikeouts, celebrated loudly by a crowd of 17,312, set the tone for Baltimore's 9-2 series-sweeping win over the Mariners. "It's something I was thinking about for a long time," said Johnson, who got the celebratory pie to the face from Adam Jones and Robert Andino before sharing a special moment with his father in the tunnel leading up to the clubhouse. "[To] get my first win and have him here. And the way those days worked out, 23 years to the day, it's just special. It's all I can really say about it. It means a lot to me."
Matt Wieters -- fresh off catching Tuesday's 14-inning win -- ensured that the rookie would get some run support. Wieters, who made it clear he wanted to be behind the plate for Johnson's debut, tied a career high with five RBIs as the surging O's improved to nine games over .500 for the first time since June 26.
Johnson's gem helped the Orioles extend a five-game winning streak -- tying their season high -- and kept the club in a three-way tie for the first Wild Card spot and just 4 1/2 games back of the American League East-leading Yankees.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman's gusto was tested early as the 24-year-old got knocked around in the first inning, yielding five runs-- including three before recording the first out -- in a 36-pitch frame. But Tillman -- who has been sick for days and on a "Z-Pak" antibiotic -- found a way to keep himself from being knocked out early. Crediting catcher Matt Wieters, who recognized from the outset that Tillman was firing less than his "A-game," the pair switched to a steady diet of offspeed pitches, keeping the Yankees off balance and Tillman in the game for another four scoreless innings.
"That first inning took it out of him," Wieters said of Tillman, who was sent home early on Monday night, hoping to feel better. "It was a stressful and tough first inning to come out of the bullpen and give up a five-spot real quick. That's what's really impressive about him. He's still 24 years old, and he knew if he could keep us in there, we'd have a chance."
Down five runs, Baltimore roared back, putting together its second seven-run inning of the season -- the first since May 5 -- off Yankees starter Ivan Nova, who surrendered a career-high nine earned runs. The second-inning barrage -- all with two outs -- started with Mark Reynolds' RBI ground-rule double, and red-hot No. 9 hitter Omar Quintanilla followed with a two-run single. Leadoff man Nick Markakis, who continues to flourish since taking over top-of-the-order duties, collected the first of his three hits on the night, and after J.J. Hardy walked, Chris Davis delivered the big blow with a grand slam.Let's get the sweep tonight! GOOOO ORIOLES!!!!
